»Dilligence

When Alice walked it was like dancing and when she danced it was like staring at the sun, once your eyes adjusted to the blinding quality of her beauty it was impossible to look away.

Her fingers rested lightly on the sleeve of Edward's jacket and tapped out the song they were dancing to. She could see Jasper leading Esme across the floor and Rosalie floating with Carlisle nearby. Emmett was by the door, looking like a bodyguard in his tuxedo.

I think I'd like a penguin, she thought as Edward spun her in a slow circle, the bottom of her dress flairing out gently before billowing around her ankles as his arm wound around her waist again.

"A penguin?" He laughed softly, too quiet for anyone else to hear. "To eat or to play with?"

She pursed her lips in thought, her fingers stilling momentarily. The pros and cons of both options flitted through her mind lightning fast, interweaving with memories and visions and each other. She was distracted by the sight of Jasper, but Edward nudged her thoughts back to penguins.

"I think, both."

He laughed again, louder. "Didn't anyone teach you not to play with your food?"

"No," she trilled happily, stepping away from him as the song ended and leaning up to kiss his cheek lightly. "Go now. Have fun being bad!" She flounced off towards Rosalie, but flitted away just as quickly when two adequately attractive men asked them to dance.

The night was turning out to be terribly fun and she smiled widely, bright white teeth shining as she was twirled around the dance floor being the perfect distraction she needed to be while the men did things that they shouldn't have been doing.

It wasn't as if anyone was going to look away with the Cullen women on the dance floor.

» Patience

"Shhh," Jasper soothed, reaching over and laying his hand against Alice's arm. She stilled almost immediately, her agitated bouncing trickling off to nothingness. "Be patient, Alice, we'll be there soon enough."

She looked over at him and her mouth turned down into a pout, her eyes pleading and desolate. "What if they say no? I can't see that."

Jasper laughed softly and the sound echoed around Alice, warming her from her fingers to her toes. Still, she stopped in front of him and put her hands on her hips, glowering up at him with her most intimidating stare. Her eyes were rimmed in a soft red that was so pale it was nearly pink, a striking contrast next to the deep and vibrant red of Jasper's.

He laughed again and reached forward tentatively, brushing his fingertips across her cheek. She rose on her tiptoes and leaned up into his touch, forcing more contact. "Patience Alice," he reminded her.

She pouted at him. He was her perfect Southern gentleman and she loved him, but he was so calm and even-keeled. Alice was not perfect and she certainly wasn't calm.

Still smiling he trailed his fingers down her arm until she threaded her fingers through his and burst up to kiss him quickly, dashing out of range lithely but still keeping claim of his hand. She could see the house now, he had been right. It wasn't far at all.

Her smile grew with every step until she was bouncing again, tripping up the steps like a tiny whirlwind as Jasper walked slower behind her, his steps slower, calmer, her utter opposite. He stopped at the foot of the stairs; she was already at the door, rapping smartly with her tiny fist.

She looked behind her and smiled at him. Her Jasper. "Come on, Jasper," she nudged, giving him a look until he stepped up to stand by her.

The smile was practically blinding when the door opened. Opportunity knocks after all.

And Jasper was wrong, she was plenty patient. She waited for him after all.

»Doubt«

"Jasper." Her voice was like soft honey, curling across his name and measuring it into too many syllables as she tiptoed across the lawn. The trickle of amusement acted as her guide and she crept to his hiding place.

She folded down next to him with a graceful drop, legs tangled Indian style across the grass, knees pressing into his side. "Hi Jasper!" she trilled. If anyone else had tried that, they would have resembled a misshapen tangle of legs and probably have fallen down -- but with Alice it was perfect and effortlessly graceful.

He murmured something like a hello and she giggled, turning her face to the sky to watch what he was watching. The stars flew across the sky impossibly fast and if she had breath she would have held it.

After a while the silence became deafening. It wasn't that she was averse to silence, she and Jasper could do this forever and she would be content. It was that Jasper was forcing the silence. Not thinking one thought past the second they were in.

She bounced impatiently in the grass, knees jumping against his ribs until his head lolled to the side and he looked at her with those eyes that made her fall in love with him all over again.

"Make up your mind," she told him, all but demanding. Nearly even begging. Something stirred inside her, a coiled snake, and her frown turned to a wicked grin as she leapt to her feet, pulling Jasper with her.

The words they were speaking to each other were lost in the wind, too low for anyone else's ears and spiraling off to who knows where, lost exacpt to each other. "He's going to kill us, Alice."

"Probably, but won't it be fun?"

"Yes Alice, I'm sure he'll make our deaths fun."

She laughed, batting at his chest with her tiny hand. "Do you doubt me, Jasper?" Her eyes sparkled in the light of the falling stars.

"Of course I do," he replied swiftly, taking her hand with his own and tugging her up the stairs.

The dance changed at the landing, Alice skirting around him and pulling him towards the room at the end of the hall, she pushed him gently through to door and they fell with a chime of laughter against the thick, plush, absolutely divine bedding.

His lips were as cold as her and she drank it in like air, the spark and crackle of the sudden energy between then, the emotions actually thick in the air. It tasted like Heaven on her tongue and she smiled as she was kissed, letting Jasper take the lead because she'd never forgotten how go he was as leader and how apt she was to follow him.

She barely noticed when he stopped kissing her, momentarily lost.

"Alice," he murmured, watching her closely. Her eyes were closed and she had a smile on her lips. "Don't start without me," he added with a laugh, sending a cool shiver down her spine before pressing his lips against hers.

"Just a sec," she mumbled against him. "One more..."

"ALICE!"

She giggled, grinning at him widely, her tongue poking between her teeth in glee. Jasper closed his eyes and sighed softly, the escaped air pushing her bangs off her face. "He's going to kill you."

"No," she said firmly. "He's too busy contemplating suicide to do that. He's going to burn the bed."

"You're impossible." But he didn't seem to mind as he was kissing her again.

She giggled again, the sound bubbling past her lips like champagne. "I'm Alice."

>>Who do you blame for your issues? <<

She tiptoed silently through the rooms until her bare feet stopped at the open door. Her bright eyes shone through the darkness and her fingers pressed into the door frame as she waited. It took, seemingly, forever for him to look up, but he finally did, nodding to her to join him.

"You're up late," she said quietly, folding herself next to him with the ease and grace of silk. The hint of the smile on her lips matched the slight twitch of his. He nodded and stayed silent and she was faintly off put by the feeling of being alone in her own mind. He wasn't reaching out to her, to see what she saw.

"I'm so sorry, Edward." Her voice was paper thin in the moonlight and she saw as his eyes flashed in the dark.

The immediate anger was palpable. "Alice..."

She cut him off, raising her small hand to stop him so she could finish. "I should have seen it. I did see it but I couldn't stop it. I should have kept a closer watch on her, forced her to go with Jasper and I, but I didn't and she got away and everything else was my fault. I couldn't see clearly." She paused, frowning and looked at her hands nestled in her lap. "It was like she knew I'd be watching so she turned me off."

Edward sighed, a soft exhale of unnecessary breath. "You think it's your fault Bella got hurt," he asked, though it was clearly not a question. Alice nodded anyway.

I'm sorry.

Don't be. She could almost hear the defeat in his thoughts. "It's not your fault."

Alice looked at Edward and nodded. They both knew the motion was just for his benefit, a false platitude. It was almost funny how they both blamed themselves for something they couldn't have controlled if they tried.

But Alice kept reminding herself that she could see the future. She was the one who'd missed James in the first place, who'd put Bella in danger, and then she'd only furthered that danger by having faith in Bella -- or rather a lack of faith in herself.

When people talked about accidents they always seemed to say, 'who's to know what would have happened'. Alice knew and she still couldn't stop it.
